– COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course will cover the basic traditional Chinese brush techniques and materials. To encourage and motivate those who have never painted, as well as those who wish to take full advantage of the mediums potential. The students will be systematically introduced to the special implements used in this technique, brushes, rice paper and ink/color.

 

– COURSE DESCRIPTION

The student will learn a variety of brush techniques including landscape and four-gentleman (plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum). Course will emphasize development of brush-stork skills, composition and development of an individual style along with study of master Chinese painting artists both past and present. Participants will be instructed on how to hold the brush properly and the use of various brush strokes. Through the study of traditional Chinese inks, students will become familiar with the amazing potential of this special medium. Development of individual response and fluency of technique will be emphasized.

 

– CHINESE BRUSH TECHNIQUES SUPPLIES:

  • 2B Drawing Pencil
  • Sketchbook
  • Maries Chinese Watercolor or
    Watercolors (Tube): Separate colors needed in the following- (Winsor & Newton, Sakura or other brands…)
      Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, French Ultramarine, Indigo, Burnt Sienna
  • Chinese Bamboo Brushes (Size: large, Medium and small)
  • Newsprint Paper
  • Suan Papers & Rice papers
  • Felt Pad (White)
  • Sumi Ink or Chinese Ink Stick with Ink Stone
  • Ceramic Mixing Saucer or Palette
  • Water Container (Washing Bowl or Cup)
  • X-Acto Knife or Cutter
  • Seal (White Soft Eraser instead of Soap Stone)
  • Stamp Pad (red)
  • Portfolio or homemade folder (optional)
